STMP boosts low-fluoride toothpaste performance
Xlear is highlighting several studies investigating sodium trimetaphosphate (STMP) combined with xylitol and erythritol. A 2022 study published in Clinical Oral Investigations found that a formulation containing 200 ppm fluoride, 0.2% STMP, 16% xylitol and 4% erythritol provided greater protection against early enamel erosion and better surface hardness recovery than a 1,100 ppm fluoride toothpaste tested under the same conditions.
An in situ study published in 2021 also associated this combination with lower enamel mineral loss and a reduction in certain extracellular polysaccharides within dental biofilm. The findings suggest that STMP and polyols can improve the performance of lower-fluoride formulations, without demonstrating that fluoride can be eliminated altogether.
