Placental vesicles explored for inflammation control

Researchers have shown that extracellular vesicles produced by the placenta in early pregnancy can reprogramme certain human immune cells to help limit inflammation. The effect was also observed in cells from patients with recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa. Published in the Journal of Extracellular Vesicles, the work remains therapeutic in scope, but opens interesting avenues for skin research around intercellular communication, inflammation modulation and, in the longer term, mechanisms associated with inflammageing.
