Sodium fluoride: a risk to neurodevelopment and fertility

ANSES proposes classifying sodium fluoride, used in oral care products, as an endocrine disruptor (cat. 1) and toxic for reproduction (cat. 1B). Its assessment was deemed a priority under SNPE2. Already classified for acute oral toxicity and skin and eye irritation, the ingredient is the subject of a public consultation on the ECHA website, which will run until 16 January 2026. The ECHA’s Risk Assessment Committee will then issue an opinion, which the European Commission will use as a basis for deciding on possible regulatory measures.
