EmpCo tightens the rules on environmental claims

From 27 September 2026, the EU EmpCo Directive (Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition) will strengthen the rules governing environmental claims and sustainability labels. General terms such as ʺenvironmentally friendlyʺ, ʺeco-friendlyʺ, ʺsustainableʺ, ʺbiodegradableʺ or ʺbio-basedʺ will need to be specifically substantiated, shifting the emphasis towards more precise, measurable and verifiable information.

The rules extend beyond words: images, symbols and pictograms that may implicitly suggest an environmental benefit are also covered. Sustainability labels will notably need to be based on transparent conditions, requirements developed with experts and stakeholders, independent third-party verification, and a procedure for withdrawal or suspension in the event of non-compliance.
