Thymol, eugenol, and tea tree essential oil: Upcoming updates

On 27 November 2025, the European Commission notified the World Trade Organisation (WTO) of a draft amendment to Annex VI of the CLP Regulation. This Adaptation to Technical Progress (ATP) provides for the addition or modification of harmonised classifications for 48 substances, including tea tree essential oil, eugenol, and thymol. Adoption is anticipated in the first quarter of 2026, with entry into force 20 days after publication in the Official Journal of the EU. Safety data sheets and labelling will then need to be updated accordingly.
