Kolmar Korea explores cooling sun care

The Korean contract manufacturer is developing three formulation technologies designed to combine UV protection with a cooling effect.

The first is based on a menthol-free ingredient comprising several botanical extracts. Kolmar Korea claims that it provides an immediate and long-lasting cooling effect as well as soothing properties, and has incorporated it into a Cooling Sun Essence.

The second approach makes direct use of the water contained within the formulation. A structure based on a layered clay material breaks down under friction to release microdroplets upon application, while allowing the UV-protective film to spread evenly across the skin. According to the contract manufacturer, this formulation lowers skin temperature by approximately 4°C and reduces subsequent heat-induced temperature increases by around 90%.

A third approach brings cooling benefits to a solid format with the Jelly Sun Stick, developed using a natural algae-derived ingredient and formulated with a high-water content. Its water-based surface cools the skin on contact, while the reduced oil phase helps maintain the structural integrity required for a solid stick, according to the company. Kolmar Korea claims an immediate reduction in skin temperature of approximately 6°C.
