Driven by advances in synthetic biology, ergothioneine (EGT) is steadily emerging as a key ingredient in anti-ageing and skin protection formulations. According to Frost & Sullivan’s recent white paper, Global Ergonomic Industry Current Landscape and Development Trends, ergothioneine is rapidly evolving from a niche antioxidant ingredient into a scalable, science-based platform for health and wellness innovation. This naturally occurring antioxidant is attracting growing interest from manufacturers thanks to improved availability and increasingly competitive production processes.
Particularly valued for its ability to accumulate in tissues exposed to oxidative stress, ergothioneine is now being incorporated into skincare products designed to preserve skin radiance, strengthen the skin’s natural defence mechanisms and help mitigate the effects of environmental ageing. Its potential is also being explored in formulations targeting protection against urban aggressors, prevention of photoageing and maintenance of cellular integrity.
As brands increasingly seek scientifically substantiated ingredients, EGT could find broader applications within the premium skincare segment, where claims related to skin longevity, resilience and overall wellbeing are becoming increasingly important. Frost & Sullivan believes that further clinical validation and enhanced production capabilities are likely to accelerate its adoption in the years ahead.
