Glycerine, a universally recognised staple, is reinventing itself. Its ozonisation has revealed unexpected skin-regenerating properties. In a comparative study, scientists from North Carolina State University (United States), the University of Ferrara (Italy), Mediplus Pharma (Japan) and the Department of Food and Nutrition (South Korea) explored the mechanisms of standard glycerine and ozonated glycerine (OG) on 3D skin models and human skin explants. The results are compelling: OG accelerates wound healing by modulating remodelling enzymes (MMP-2) and reducing early inflammatory signals (IL-1α). It also supports the secretion of TGF-β1, a growth factor essential for tissue repair. OG also targets inflamm’ageing by protecting elastin against inflammatory stress and reducing MMP-9 expression. Furthermore, OG promotes the expression of structural proteins that are essential for the skin barrier (claudin-1, desmocollin-1 and type III collagen).
