C-Beauty: China shifts from manufacturing to innovation

Long associated with its industrial strength, China is now establishing itself as a genuine laboratory for cosmetic innovation. Biotechnology, highly targeted claims, proprietary actives and accelerated development cycles are reshaping C-Beauty, driven by particularly well-informed and demanding consumers.

From Made in China to Created in China. For Fei Xu, Market Intelligence Director at Asia Cosme Lab, this phrase sums up the transformation of China’s cosmetics industry. Local brands are investing more heavily in research, proprietary ingredients and biotechnology, while strengthening the clinical substantiation of their claims through collaborations with universities, hospitals and research institutes.

Precision efficacy

This shift reflects increasingly specific consumer expectations. Broad claims around hydration or anti-ageing are giving way to more targeted concerns: redness, post-acne marks, oily scalp, hair loss, fatigue linked to lack of sleep, or recovery following aesthetic procedures. Fei Xu describes this as “precision efficacy”: a product designed around a clearly identified need, paired with a benefit that is both easy to understand and measurable.

Ingredient engineering

This higher level of scrutiny also extends to ingredients. Simply including an ingredient in a formula is no longer enough. Purity, concentration, origin, molecular size, mechanism of action and delivery systems are all becoming points of differentiation. This “ingredient engineering” is pushing brands to demonstrate the overall coherence of their formulations rather than relying solely on trending actives.

Accelerated innovation

Another distinctive feature of the Chinese model is the speed of the feedback loop between consumers, R&D and the market. Social media, reviews, livestreaming and e-commerce platforms make it possible to identifyemerging usages, textures and ingredient combinations extremely quickly. Concepts are tested, launched and then continuously refined in response to market feedback.

Heritage reinvented

At the same time, C-Beauty is reinterpreting its heritage through science. Traditional Chinese medicine and local botanicals are inspiring developments optimised through biotechnology, while cultural identity is also helping to shape brand universes.

Towards resilience

The next stage could centre on long-term skin health: resilience, recovery, repair and maintaining skin quality with age. Make-up is already following this trend, with brands such as Into You and Perfect Diary increasingly incorporating skincare benefits into complexion and lip products.

China is therefore no longer positioning itself simply as a market to conquer, but as one from which the global cosmetics industry can now learn.

Fei Xu will present these trends during the conference “C-Beauty Trends: Decoding the Winning Formula Behind Chinese Brands”, on 5 November 2026 at in-cosmetics Asia, taking place from 3 to 5 November in Bangkok.
