The French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety warns consumers about the risks associated with serums designed to stimulate eyelash growth. These products could cause irreversible changes in eye colour and loss of fat around the eye socket, as reported in a cosmetovigilance case that occurred in February 2025. The cause lies in the presence of prostaglandin-like substances, such as isopropyl cloprostenate. Used in ophthalmology, these hormones can lead to permanent darkening of the iris, chronic irritation, and loss of periorbital fat. In June 2025, the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) published a preliminary opinion stating that none of the three prostaglandin analogues examined can be considered safe for cosmetic use. The industry is now awaiting the European Union's final ruling on these substances.
