ÄIO: First tonne of yeast-based oil

The Estonian biotech company has produced its first large-scale batch of one tonne of encapsulated oil, an eco-friendly alternative to traditional oils used in cosmetics and food. Derived from an innovative precision fermentation process that valorises industrial waste, this production marks a 300-fold increase in its capacity.

This oil can replace polluting versions such as palm oil, particularly in cosmetic products, where it provides nourishing and bioactive benefits. Backed by €1 million in public funding, ÄIO plans to produce 2,000 tonnes per year, with several partnerships already in place. This progress demonstrates the commercial and ecological viability of fermented alternatives to traditional raw materials, amid growing regulatory and environmental pressures.
