Skin Longevity: How to Scientifically Substantiate Preventive Skincare Claims

Advances in geroscience, increasing life expectancy, and changing consumer expectations are reshaping the cosmetics industry. After decades dominated by traditional anti-aging approaches, a new concept is gaining momentum: Skin Longevity.

Rather than simply correcting visible signs of aging, Skin Longevity focuses on preserving the biological functions that allow skin to remain healthy, resilient, and functional over time. This vision closely aligns with the growing Skincoretrend, which prioritizes skin health, prevention, and barrier maintenance over purely corrective solutions.

Recent research on the Hallmarks of Aging has significantly improved our understanding of skin aging. Cellular senescence, genomic instability, telomere attrition, mitochondrial dysfunction, epigenetic alterations, and stem cell exhaustion are now recognized as key mechanisms driving the progressive decline of skin function.

As longevity claims become increasingly prominent, brands are seeking robust scientific evidence demonstrating their impact on these biological pathways. This requires evaluation strategies that go beyond the assessment of visible benefits alone.

Human skin ex vivo models have become valuable tools for investigating longevity-related mechanisms. Combined with transcriptomics, RNA sequencing, qPCR, histology, and MultiOmics technologies, they enable the simultaneous evaluation of multiple biomarkers associated with skin aging.

These biomarkers provide insights into cellular senescence, telomere protection, mitochondrial function, stem cell preservation, autophagy, chronic inflammation, and extracellular matrix integrity. Such mechanistic approaches improve the understanding of how ingredients and formulations interact with biological pathways involved in healthy skin aging.

To address the growing demand for scientifically substantiated longevity claims, Eurofins Cosmetics & Personal Care has developed SKIN CORE, an integrated ex vivo platform dedicated to Skin Longevity assessment. Combining human skin explants, transcriptomic analyses, targeted biomarker panels, and histological validation, the platform provides a holistic view of the biological mechanisms involved in skin aging.

However, biological evidence alone is not sufficient. Clinical studies remain essential to translate mechanistic findings into meaningful consumer benefits.

Skin Longevity claims may encompass wrinkles, firmness, skin texture, pigmentation, radiance, barrier function, microbiome balance, and perceived age. Recent advances in imaging technologies, including VISIA®, OCT, LC-OCT, confocal microscopy, and 3D facial analysis, enable increasingly precise and objective assessments of these parameters.

Beyond biology and clinical performance, longevity also embraces a broader vision of healthy aging. Growing attention is being paid to the relationship between skin appearance, self-perception, emotions, and well-being. Psychometric assessments, behavioural analyses, and innovative methodologies such as the Mirror-Test™ help evaluate the emotional and quality-of-life dimensions of cosmetic product performance.

Skin Longevity therefore represents far more than a marketing trend. It reflects the evolution of cosmetics toward a multidisciplinary science combining biomarkers, ex vivo models, clinical studies, image analysis, and emotional assessment to better understand skin health and support healthy aging over time.
