Macro Oceans quantifies the footprint of its kelp-based moisturising active
The US specialist in macroalgae-derived ingredients has published the results of a life cycle assessment (LCA) of Big Kelp Hydration, its kelp-derived moisturising ingredient. Conducted by consultancy Planet FWD in accordance with ISO 14040 and 14044, the study takes a cradle-to-gate approach, covering the process from raw material production through to the factory gate. According to the results reported, the ingredient would generate 85% fewer carbon emissions and use 27 times less water than hyaluronic acid, based on the quantities required in one ounce of finished product at the recommended use levels.
The comparison also includes aloe vera and assesses several indicators, including energy and land use, water quality and eutrophication. The company attributes these results in particular to kelp cultivation, which requires no arable land, freshwater irrigation, fertilisers or pesticides, as well as to its processing method, which it describes as zero-waste.
However, Macro Oceans points out that the LCA does not cover the manufacture of the finished cosmetic product, consumer use or end of life, and has not yet undergone a formal independent third-party review. Big Kelp Hydration is also recommended for use at 3% in formulations, around six times the concentration of hyaluronic acid used in the comparison.
